Definition
R-454B is a refrigerant blend of R-32 and R-1234yf used in many new residential air conditioners and heat pumps as a lower-global-warming replacement for R-410A. EPA's reference table lists its GWP at 465, under the limit of 700 for new residential systems. It is classified A2L, meaning lower toxicity and lower flammability.
Why it matters to you
Some manufacturers use R-454B and others use R-32, so two quotes for a new heat pump in Clark County or the Portland metro may specify different refrigerants. Both meet the federal limit; what matters more is that indoor and outdoor components are matched and installed to the safety standard.
Practical guidance
Note which refrigerant each quote specifies and confirm the components are a matched set for it. R-454B, R-32 and R-410A are not interchangeable, so every future repair must use the refrigerant on the data plate.
