Definition
R-32, or difluoromethane, is a single-component refrigerant used in many new ductless mini-splits, heat pumps and air conditioners as a lower-global-warming replacement for R-410A, which is itself half R-32 by weight. EPA's reference table lists its GWP at 675, under the 700 limit. It is classified A2L, meaning lower toxicity and lower flammability.
Also called: HFC-32, Difluoromethane
Why it matters to you
R-32 is widely used in ductless mini-splits, a popular choice for SW Washington homes with baseboard heat, additions or ADUs. It cannot be mixed with R-410A or R-454B, and its equipment follows the same A2L installation and service rules.
Practical guidance
Ask whether a quote's indoor and outdoor components are a matched R-32 set and how any required refrigerant leak detection is handled. Leave refrigerant handling and sensor wiring to a certified technician.
