What is a Condenser Coil?

A condenser coil is the finned outdoor heat exchanger inside a condensing unit where hot, high-pressure refrigerant gives up the heat it absorbed indoors. The condenser fan draws outdoor air across the aluminum fins and tubing, and the refrigerant condenses from vapor back into liquid as it cools. A heat pump's outdoor coil serves this role in cooling mode.

Why it matters to you

Pacific Northwest yards load outdoor coils with fir needles, leaves, moss and pollen, and a matted coil forces the system to run at higher pressures and use more electricity. Cleaning the coil after the wet season is a standard part of a spring tune-up in Clark County and the Portland metro.

Practical guidance

With the system off at the thermostat, homeowners can clear debris from around the cabinet and gently rinse loose dirt from the coil with a garden hose, never a pressure washer, and without bending the fins. Chemical coil cleaning and fin straightening belong in a professional tune-up.
