Definition
Outdoor design temperature is the outdoor condition a heating or cooling system is sized to handle, taken from ACCA Manual J tables or ASHRAE weather data. Heating design temperatures represent cold conditions exceeded on all but a small share of winter hours; cooling design temperatures represent hot conditions exceeded only on rare summer hours.
Also called: Design temperature, Design conditions
Why it matters to you
In Clark County and the Portland metro, design temperatures are what keep a system sized for occasional east-wind cold snaps out of the Columbia River Gorge and summer heat waves without oversizing it for the mild days that make up most of the year. Sizing to the record extreme instead tends to produce oversized, short-cycling equipment.
Practical guidance
Ask any installer which outdoor design temperatures their Manual J calculation used and how the heat pump or backup heat covers conditions colder than that. The load calculation itself is contractor work.
