Definition
Manual D is the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) standard for sizing residential duct systems. Using room-by-room loads from a Manual J calculation and the blower's available pressure, it sizes each trunk, branch, and fitting so every room receives its designed airflow. ACCA describes it as ANSI-recognized and applicable to all duct materials.
Also called: ACCA Manual D
Why it matters to you
Rooms that never match the thermostat, such as a hot upstairs bonus room in a July heat wave or a cold back bedroom in January, are often a duct-sizing problem rather than an equipment problem. Homes in the Portland metro that have added rooms over the years frequently have runs grafted on without a design behind them.
Practical guidance
When replacing equipment, redoing ducts, or finishing an addition, ask whether the ducts will be sized to a Manual D design based on a Manual J load. The calculation and any duct changes are done by a qualified HVAC contractor.
